Diatoms are unicellular algae present in both fresh and salt water and have the ability to retain silicon dissolved in water. After they die, their skeletons fossilize, forming a white, light and very porous rock called diatomite. From this rock, drying and crushing it, the diatomite powder used in water filtration is obtained.
