The diatoms are unicellular algae present in both fresh water and salt water and that have the ability to retain the silicon dissolved in the water. After dying, their skeletons are fossilized forming a white, light and very porous rock called diatomite. From this rock, drying and crushing it, the diatomite dust used in water filtration is obtained. Thanks to the great porosity and reduced size of diatomites, particles of up to 2 microns are filtered.
